Worldaware winners

Now in their 12th year, the 2000 Worldaware Business Awards have been presented at a ceremony in London. This year’s winners were:

  • The Rio Tinto Award for Long-term Commitment: ICICI in India, for providing financial assistance, advice and training to local organisations, helping them to work more efficiently and effectively.
  • The Shell Award for Sustainable Development: Richards Bay Minerals in South Africa. A major employer in mining, their policyis to encourage small local businesses to bid for contracts within the company.
  • The Worldaware Award for Innovation: Roke Manor Research in England, for their cheap and potentially life-saving landmine detector which does not require batteries.
  • The Crown Agents Foundation Award for Small Businesses: Ceramica Tamakloe, a small company in Ghana which has created a successful export market for its ceramic products.
  • The News International Not-for-Profit Award: FARM Africa, for its work in training people in veterinary skills and helping to develop goat-breeding into a more profitable source of income.
